Forza Ferrari!!!

The recent F1 season is by far the most exhilarating and dramatic season with the spying scandal and drivers’ feud thanks to McLaren that added human spice to a sport that seemed to focus on speed and technology.

I really thought the race is between Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton. I was dead wrong! I know that Kimi Räikkönen is still in contention but I kind of dismissed the idea of him winning. Like his moniker “Iceman” suggest, Kimi was like a predator stalking the two McLaren drivers and when he had the chance, pounced and ran away with the drivers’ championship. Very very sneaky! Not to downplay Kimi, he actually had a good start this season winning the Australian Grand Prix. His teammate Massa and the two McLaren drivers outpaced him until the 7th and 8th race, French and British Grand Prix respectively. And come winning time, he won 3 of the last 4 races, the Belgian, Chinese and Brazilian Grand Prix. He won a total of 6 races this season compared to Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton each having 4 wins. Also notable this season is his tenacity, which made him at striking distance of the driver’s championship. At times he did not finish on the podium, with 2 retirements in Spain and Europe, he still managed to score points by finishing no. 8 in Monaco (1 point), no. 5 in Canada (4 points) and no. 4 in the US (5 points). Kimi Räikkönen finished with 110 points, both Alonso and Hamilton with 109 points, truly a heartbreaker for the two… as cold as it can get by Kimi.

Felipe Massa racing on his home track (Brazilian Grand Prix) made complications for the two McLaren drivers. Starting on pole position, I am pretty convinced that Massa should have won the race but would have cost Kimi Räikkönen the drivers’ championship. But knowing he’s the number two driver and already out for the drivers’ championship, I suspect that he gave way. That’s the Ferrari winning formula that Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello have used in the past and the McLAren driver’s should learn it if they want to be on top. A clear line of who is number one and two must be drawn.

The Ferrari Team once again proved that they are at the top of the sport. At one point in the season, when the spying scandal broke out, the question that’s bothering me is how they can beat McLaren? But somehow towards the end, they were able to win 9 races over McLaren’s 8 or they were just lucky Hamilton made a mistake in the wet Chinese Grand Prix?

Lewis Hamilton is truly surprising and is the future of F1. He could have won it, first ever as a rookie, if not for the mechanical failure early in the race that cost him to start from the back. But due to his superb driving, he still managed to finish 7th including a brave curve overtaking Rubens Barrichello. BMW and Williams allegedly made some refueling irregularities and if they were penalized, Hamilton would have moved up to 5th place and won the drivers’ championship by a point. But Hamilton, the competitive gentleman he is, expressed no interest in winning by a protest… he prefers to win the title on the track. A few more seasons or maybe next season, he’ll surprise us again but I hope not with race retirements!

Fernando Alonso’s winning streak on the other hand has been singed. Was going to McLaren a mistake on his part? For McLaren, it was truly a gain. There’s a lot of question for Alonso right now and since the season is over, everybody’s wondering whom will he race for. Ferrari looks content with their present lineup. Will he go to Toyota to replace Ralf Schumacher? His best chance of winning is with a team with a superior car and at present, that’s Ferrari and McLaren. Or he might as well return to Renault, BMW? The whole world is guessing right now.

With Michael Schumacher out of the picture and with Alonso’s failure to win this season, the playing field is pretty much leveled which makes next season exciting… Especially the newly added Singaporean Grand Prix night race!

F1 Super Season Ender

What a way to end a season! Three drivers are deadlocked on winning this season’s F1 Drivers' Championship. At the end of the Chinese Grand Prix, Hamilton still leads the pack with 107 championship points followed by Alonso with 103 points and lastly Räikkönen with 100 points. The final race to resolve the dispute… the Brazilian Grand Prix.

I watched the other night the replay of the Chinese Grand Prix on Star Sports. The Drivers' Championship would have been considered in the bag for Hamilton if not for the mishap (probably his own doing… rookie mistake). He was leading considerably and made a mistake in not changing his tires to dry weather ones much earlier (in the early part of the race, the track was wet). He opted to stay with his wet weather tires and drove fast as Räikkönen attacked him. As the track was beginning to dry, his tires deteriorated loosing grip and as he was entering the pit (there’s a sharp curve leading to the pit), he slid off to the gravel trap and got stuck forcing him to retire.

Any of the three driver’s mentioned earlier are now given a chance to win the Drivers' Championship with the following scenarios using the top eight point system (10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1):
  • Hamilton can be on top and make history as the first rookie champion if he wins the Brazilian Grand Prix. He will end up with 117 points.
  • If Hamilton finishes 2nd and Alonso wins the race. Alonso will have 113 championship points and Hamilton with 115 points. Hamilton still wins!
  • If Hamilton finishes 3rd or 4th, he’ll end up with 113 and 112 points respectively. Alonso finishes 1st or 2nd, he’ll end up with 113 and 111 points respectively. So, with Alonso at 1st and Hamilton at 3rd, we have a tie.
  • If Hamilton does another rookie mistake and not finish the race… the dream is over and it’s up to Alonso and Räikkönen to slug it out.
  • For Alonso to win, he must finish 1st with Hamilton finishing lower than 3rd place.
  • For Räikkönen to win, he must finish 1st with Alonso finishing lower than 2nd and Hamilton lower than 6th place.
Felipe Massa in 4th place with 86 points is already considered out for the drivers' championship but he can surely complicate things for the top three if he won the race like he did last year (2006 Brazilian Grand Prix).

Nobody can really predict the outcome of this season even if McLaren outnumber Ferrari wins in the Brazilian track (11 to 8). If we are to consider the race wins from year 2000 onwards, Ferrari outnumbers McLaren (3 to 2). See the details on Wikipedia!

Will the raging Spaniard do a three-peat? Will the rookie make history... or history with another mistake? Or be surprised by the Finnish in red! I guess we’ll just have to watch the ultimate race on October 21!

The Filipino who conquered Mexico

And so… Pacquiao scored another win… though some are not happy about the way he won. The Filipino people have gotten used to knockout wins by the peoples champ. There are a lot of possible reasons he was not able to deliver the devastating blow to Barrera’s career and here are some;
  • Pacquiao was obviously overweight before the weigh-in prompting him to still workout and reduce food intake unlike Barrera. This definitely affected Pacquiao’s knockout power although his stamina in all 12 rounds is superb.
  • In their first fight, Manny was able to floor Barrera many times in the early rounds and finally downing him in the 11th round. In their second outing, Barrera could have been knocked out if not for the cheap shot in the 11th round while the referee is separating the two fighters. Pacquiao obviously hurt and shaken was not able to do a follow-up assault buying Barrera time to recoup.
  • My Dad though… has his own theory. I don’t know if his eyes are already failing him but he believes Pacquiao’s gloves were thick. Meaning he was really overweight during the weigh-in but the promoters according to my Dad kept it a secret and instead penalized Pacquiao with padded gloves. Which resulted to softer than usual blows by Pacquiao. Sounds extreme but I chose not to argue with the guy who religiously followed Pacquiao’s career even in his Blow-by-Blow days.
  • The really sound explanation is due to Barrera’s conditioning and tactics as evident in his footwork always gearing away from Pacquiao’s southpaw stance. He definitely wants to finish the bout and retire standing on his two feet. But should the fight go on, Pacquiao would have ripped his face! Babyface assassin no more…
Here are other updates with Pacquiao. Before the fight, he was reported to be moving to the lightweight division because of the difficulty he encountered in trimming his weight. Then, after the fight, Pacquiao is now open to fighting in two weight divisions and would really like to face Edwin Valero. The latter is the sparring mate of Barrera and has been itching ever since for a fight with Pacquiao. Barrera claimed Valero is capable of beating Pacquiao, a thought he made public during the post fight conference.

Each of Pacquiao’s fight is a fight for survival and respect. He can’t afford to lose at this stage in his career… although he’s already rich and retirement seems logical. But warriors like Pacquiao have a destiny to fulfill, before he retires, he must reach the ultimate reward of being a legitimate world champion.

Hectic Sunday Afternoon!

Today October 7, 2007 is the much-awaited rematch between Manny Pacquiao and Marco Antonio Barrera. I checked the ESPN site and it was reported that Pacquiao won via unanimous decision. Would have been better if it was a win via knock out but then Barrera is definitely prepared this time around and without question physically fit. But a win is still a win! At the moment (3:27 PM), I’m still watching the delayed telecast now on round 10. The middle rounds of this 12 round fight are so far war and Manny is still on the rampage showing no signs of slowing down. I’m waiting for the controversial 11th round.

But today is not just about Manny. On the local front, it’s UE vs. La Salle game 2 for the UAAP championships. UE is trailing La Salle (Al Salle) and if they lose today, it’s a big blow out for what might been a perfect season for them (14-0 in the elimination round). UE definitely have to bounce back. Viva Mapua… ooooppps!

On the international front (my friend JJ buzzed me), there’s 10 laps left in the F1 Chinese Grand Prix. Lewis Hamilton spun out and was out of the race. Alonso is currently number 2 behind Ferrari’s Kimi Räikkönen. This gives Alonso a chance for the driver’s championship (trailing Hamilton by 12 points)… wish for another blow out by Hamilton in the Brazilian Grand Prix (last race of the season)!

McLaren

Ferrari, McLaren-Mercedes, Renault, and BMW are considered the top F1 teams. Renault’s Fernando Alonso snatched the driver’s championship from Ferrari’s Michael Schumacher back in 2005 and 2006. Alonso is now with McLaren and the constructor is back at the pole position early in the current 2007 season. McLaren’s early dominance is not only attributed to Alonso but also to the surprising rookie F1 driver, Lewis Hamilton and for the fact that they have a better car this year.

I’m a Ferrari and Schumacher fan but I am starting to be a fan of Alonso for the fact that he did not suffered adjustment snags just after transferring to McLaren and he’s currently on the number two spot in the driver’s championship before going to the Japanese Grand Prix. You might be thinking why just number two? The number one spot for now belongs to… again… the surprising rookie… Hamilton (leading by 2 points with 97 pts). The Alonso-Hamilton tandem backed by a superior car is pretty solid from the beginning but serious cracks from the two drivers relationship is beginning to surface… obviously, since Hamilton is not playing the part of the no. 2 driver. At the end of the first half and the early third quarter of the season, Hamilton took the opportunity to be in front of Alonso and might even go down in history as the greatest rookie sensation ever in F1 not to mention that he is British with Caribbean descent.

For McLaren, they are set to capture the constructor’s championship this year until… the spying issue. McLaren’s chief designer Mike Coughlan allegedly received top-secret data (780 paged technical dossier) from Ferrari’s chief engineer Nigel Stepney in April. The FIA (Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile) penalized McLaren by removing them from the constructor’s championship.

Somehow, Ferrari’s technical information was used to McLaren’s advantage and although Alonso and Hamilton were not involved, they have benefited from it. To prove that they are really the best, they have to win the remaining races and repeat the feat next season. But whether Alonso will still drive for McLaren is in question. There are news that he might return to Renault, go to BMW or even Ferrari because of ongoing rift with Hamilton.

Alonso amidst all of these is already one of the best… Hamilton, again… the surprising one, must prove his worth next season.

Makes Sense!

My brother introduced me to the idea of blogging and he told me to read about a certain Filipina who is making a living out of it. I went snooping and read experiences by professional bloggers on the net and then I started my blog Pinoy Technocrata and then Couch Potato Journal. In my readings, I chanced upon a tip from professional bloggers regarding how you can earn some buck while blogging and the highly recommended way of doing it is through Google’s AdSense program.

But here’s something better given to me by a friend while I was promoting my blog. This site will pay its members (signing up is free) by just viewing the advertisements on its site. I’m just on my second day and I have viewed 3 advertisements so far which translates into 0.03 USD. I think there’d be two unique advertisements that can be viewed everyday, that’s for the free signup. To get the most out of it, you have to obviously view more advertisements on just one sitting and to do that you have to upgrade your member account for 10 USD

Everybody’s jumping on the advertising bandwagon… Do you think it’s a god deal? If yes… click on this link!

Parental Control

This decade will be forever known as the one that popularized “reality TV.” There’s Survivor now on its 15th season (China) and The Amazing Race (US) with 11 seasons, considered as the two most watched reality shows. The downside to this shows is that they follow the “series” format so when you forgot to watch an episode… it sucks!.. unless you get to watch the replay before the next episode.

There is another type of reality TV show and they usually take thirty to sixty minutes of your time. They are known as “dating reality shows” which have been around since the 70’s but made even better (define better) nowadays. There’s Change of Heart, The 5th Wheel and Elimidate, which are straightforward and might be too much for conservatives.

This year, I’ve seen two hilarious dating games different from the ones I mentioned. The first one is Date My Mom and the second is Parental Control. With the former, it’s pretty obvious, the guy would have to date three mothers without seeing their daughters. After the dates, he must choose the mother whose daughter he wants to date. The ones he did not picked are first revealed to him so there’s a lot of hilarious “side comments” from the guys whether they made a good/bad choice in terms of appearance. Most of the time, the guy’s end up picking the more beautiful mom but not all the time does he ends up with the most attractive daughter. There was an episode where the guy didn’t chose the mother whose features is Asian (but she’s not ugly) and it turns out that her daughter was the hottest one and she doesn’t look like her mother!

With Parental Control, both parents are involved. They have to choose two men to date their daughter who happens to have a boyfriend. With the setup, you know that the parents does not approve of the boyfriend. And to add insult to injury, the current boyfriend must watch the video of the dates together with his girlfriend’s parents. Again, you’ll hear a lot of funny side comments both coming from the parents and the boyfriend with the boyfriend mocking the dates and trying to make them believe that their daughter would still pick him while the parents tells him of his impending replacement. I’ve watched two episodes so far and the first episode I saw, the boyfriend was replaced. What a way to get rid of your boyfriend and get a new one in front of international TV!

See the show for yourselves at ETC (Entertainment Central) at 6 PM… on weekdays…

USA Men’s Basketball, will they do it this time?

Dr. James Naismith, a Canadian, on American soil in 1891, invented basketball. Soon, basketball would be played across the globe and would be governed by the International Basketball Federation or FIBA, which stands for Fédération Internationale de Basketball Amateur formed in 1932. The A for Amateur was later on dropped (1989) due to the entry of professional NBA players, although FIBA is still in use but not as an acronym.

The US Men’s Basketball Team would dominate international competitions whether FIBA sanctioned tournaments or the Olympics through the years. Basketball was incorporated in the Olympics in the 1936 Berlin Games and the USA since then has won 12 gold medals followed by the Soviet Union with 2, Yugoslavia with 1 and Argentina with 1. Having beaten by the Soviet Union in the 1988 Seoul Summer Games, the US formed a new team composed of professionals from the NBA for the 1992 Barcelona Summer Games and was dubbed as the “Dream Team.” Great stars such as Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan lead the team and would be followed by other professional players for the 1996, 2000 games and onwards. Looking at the records from the FIBA website (1950~2006), USA shares the top spot with the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia in terms of gold medal count but leads in the total medal count with 10. The first ever appearance of NBA players from the US in the FIBA World Championships was in 1994 when Shaquille O'Neal, Alonzo Mourning, Dominique Wilkins, Dan Majerle, Reggie Miller, Shawn Kemp and others suit up to form the successful “Dream Team II.”

The dominance of US Men’s Basketball has declined and it started in the 2000 Sydney Olympics when they managed to win against Lithuania just by two points in the semifinals and a ten-point margin to win the gold against France. Now, it’s a big question mark having failed to conquer the 2004 Athens Olympics, 2005 FIBA Americas and 2006 FIBA World Championships even though they have fielded NBA players. The world has finally caught up with the Americans as many would say. To some more technically incline with the game, it’s due to difference in styles or game play where there’s the European, American and even Asian brand of basketball. Over the years, the European style has evolved or matured into a team-based pass the ball game play having mastered the amateur rules. In the defense side, they have mastered the zone defense as opposed to Americans one-on-one defense. Some would argue however that the poor performance of the team in international games is due to non-fielding of players that are considered the best of the crop and the fact that other nations teams have played together longer.

The Americans are no longer in the number one spot of the sport worldwide but they have remained to be a team to watch. Such is the case of the new team that is competing in the on-going FIBA Americas, which is considered to be the youngest NBA sponsored team to ever compete internationally. For the first time, Kobe Bryant would be playing in his much-awaited international debut. They definitely have a lot to prove especially under Mike Krzyzewski whose best record in the FIBA World Championships are two “bronze medals” (1990 and 2006). I happened to watch their first game against Venezuela (a young team) which they won by a big margin and I was a little intrigued on how would they fair with other teams especially Argentina (Manu Ginobili is not in the roster). The team exudes quickness, agility and tremendous athleticism and looking at the roster, everything seems to be in place. They have centers that are quick that I think is capable of guarding the rim and the shooting department that is not evident from previous teams is filled up well this time. They pass the ball more and their defense is much better now. I am not a fan of Kobe Bryant but his debut is turning out to be way better than expected, he shares the ball more and provides leadership on the floor. LeBron is explosive as ever and Michael Redd delivers from outside as expected. I just hope they won’t choke in the finals, and their second stringers perform at par with the first.

Although some big stars are in the injured list, my favorite Dwayne Wade, the team for me is solid enough. It may be early to say that this team will go all the way but I hope they continue to play together not just in the FIBA Americas but also in the Olympics and FIBA World Championships. They are already showing greatness at this point probably a little less than the first Dream Team. But the question in my mind still linger… will they make it this time?

Cool Quentin Tarantino!

The coveted director who rose from being a video shop clerk was in Manila for the Cinemanila International Film Festival and eventually, to receive his “Lifetime Achievement Award.” He’s the second Hollywood celebrity that visited the Philippines in just two months. The first is Josh Hartnett who did a shoot in Mindanao for a part of the movie “I Come With the Rain.” Many admired Quentin’s decision to grace the event amidst typhoons that are expected to reach the main land.

On the day he was to receive his award in Malacañang, heavy traffic was building up due to heavy flooding near a mall in Sta. Mesa. His ride, which is a limousine, was not able to negotiate the traffic for two hours. As they are going to be late for the ceremony, Amable Aguiluz suggested that they take a “pedicab.” So they took a pedicab separately, since they wouldn’t fit in just one, until they reached Nagtahan where they hitched a car (the owner of the car must have thanked the rains on this one) to the palace.

Quentin’s pants and shoes were soaked wet that prompted Mr. Aguiluz to buy new shoes. To replace his wet pants was a pair of jogging pants (looks black on TV) with white lining on the side (which could have been fine if not for the stripe). I guess Mr. Aguiluz was not able to buy new pants due to Quentin’s big frame or was it just a mental lapse? And so not acting like a prima donna / fashionista, he wore his “barong” and went on with the ceremony that was caught by the evening news. But here’s the kicker, to think that flooded Manila was not embarrassment enough, the president of the Philippines was late for the ceremony! Later when Quentin was asked about the joy ride (more of a boat ride), he just took it as an inevitable experience.

But what caught me most of his stay in the country is his comment about piracy. When asked by a reporter of the Philippine Daily Inquirer regarding Filipinos buying his movies for 25 cents, he said ‘As long as they’re seen by people, I don’t care. I’m f$#&ing rich!’ Spoken as an artist and not a greedy businessman.

Initial D

When it comes to animation, you have to give the Japanese the title of being the best. There was a time animation was plainly two-dimensional art but they pushed the boundaries and made it appear as if it’s three dimensional with the likes of “Macross.” They pretty much made anime series for all sorts of genres from giant robots (Gundam, Voltes V, Daimos etc), martial arts (Ghost Fighter, Dragon Ball Z, Flame of Recca etc), sports (Captain Tsubasa, Slam Dunk etc) and there was even a series about cooking (though I forgot the title). Anime as a word that the world would later accept has varying concepts and themes but present in all forms would be the attention to details the Japanese are known for and the manner they tell a story.

At the same time I was learning how to drive two years ago, a new series invaded Philippine TV through Animax. Although it is a bit delayed to reach our shores (as usual), “Initial D” as the title explores the fascination of Japanese with street (drift) racing in mountain passes composed of uphill and downhill segments. It started out as a comic book (manga) before it was adapted to anime, later on a video game and a movie. One element that made it more interesting is the use of “J-Pop” for its soundtrack. You cannot help but notice the sense of speed it brings during races. Although it’s in Japanese, which I don’t understand, I can’t help but appreciate the beat by the band “Move.”

The series revolves around a teenager named Takumi Fujiwara whose name alone which sounds like the first syllable of “tachometer” gives you a hint that it’s about cars and racing. A simple, most of the time quiet kid working as a part time gasoline attendant by day and helps his father Bunta, a famous street racer in his time, with the family business by delivering tofu. The car he uses is a “Toyota AE86 Sprinter Trueno GT-Apex” also called “Panda” because of its black and white color scheme. My first reaction seeing the car was that it’s outdated compared to the cars available in video games like Gran Turismo 4 and the ones you see in Top Gear and the horsepower is ancient compared to present ones.  As each season rolled out (1st, 2nd, 3rd & 4th Stage), modifications to the interior and exterior of the car made it look sinister and viciously fast.

For fans of GT4, there’s actually a Trueno that can be bought with the same color scheme used in the anime (but without the sign of the tofu shop on the side) designed by Shuichi Shigeno, the creator of Initial D himself. The good thing about the Trueno is that it has a front engine rear drive configuration (FR) so it’s suited for drift racing.

Takumi got into racing to save his friend Iketani, who is the leader of the Akina Speed Stars, from humiliation by assuming the top driver of the group after he figured in an accident before his race against Keisuke Takahashi of the Red Suns. However, Iketani didn’t expect that Takumi would be the driver as they were expecting his father Bunta whom Iketani asked earlier to drive for them.He won his first race to the surprise of Iketani and his best friend Itsuki, unknown to them he has mastered the course since he had driven through Mount Akina for the past five years. He would go on to beat a lot of top drivers from other teams and develop driving skills and race tactics mostly during each race. He went up against modern cars like the Mazda RX-7 FD, Civic EG-6, Mitsubishi Lancer Evo (4WD), Nissan Skyline R32 (4WD) but always ends up ahead. Takumi joined the “Project D” team (4th stage) headed by Ryusuke Takahashi (Keisuke’s brother, top driver of the Red Suns which he beat during the 1st Stage) together with Keisuke as the teams two top drivers with the former specializing on the downhill battle (term used for race) and the latter for the uphill battle.

Initial D is not just all about racing, drifting and all you can possibly experience as a teenager (teenage love and disappointments). Underneath it all, it is about the relationship between a father and his son. Bunta schemingly passed on to Takumi what he treasures most aside from his family and he did this without asking his son directly. By making Takumi deliver tofu everyday early in the morning to a hotel crossing Mount Akina through dry, wet and snowy weather, he eventually developed his son’s driving skills. After each delivery, he observes the condition of the car, tires etc and to test his son’s skill, he tries different engine and suspension settings without even telling Takumi. Although Takumi’s skill is so far superior against his peers, he has yet to beat his father.

Initial D is not your typical anime so don’t expect cute animals/characters chasing each other around with ironically the protagonist pounding the hell out of the antagonist (and they say cartoons are just for kids) but there are funny moments mostly by Itsuke. There’s a lot of technical stuff about cars that are discussed, in the same way Slam Dunk explains techniques in basketball, by Ryusuke with each race that relates to tactics.  If you’re into cars and racing, you’ll definitely like Initial D but don’t even try to imitate Takumi’s driving or try drifting without proper training.
